The 2020 California Distinguished Schools Award Program has recognized nine San Diego Unified elementary schools for closing the achievement gap and for achieving exceptional student performance.

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond highlighted the efforts of staff as well as parents in improving outcomes at these schools, in the California Department of Education's official news release.

"These outstanding schools don't just educate students; they also provide the young people of California the tools they need to be successful after graduation," Thurmond said. "Thanks go to all the staff at these schools-teachers, administrators, classified employees-and parents, who are working together to provide high-quality educational experiences for all of their students."

San Diego Unified's honored schools for 2020 are:

  • Birney Elementary
  • Crown Point Elementary
  • Dingeman Elementary
  • Ericson Elementary
  • Hancock Elementary
  • Hawthorne Elementary
  • Jerabek Elementary
  • Jonas Salk Elementary
  • Rolando Park Elementary

Echoing Thurmond's statements, San Diego school leaders have given credit to their staff and parents for the prestigious recognition.

"Everyone at Rolando Park is so proud of this accomplishment because it illustrates how hard we work educating and taking care of our awesome students," said Rolando Park Elementary principal Anthony DeLuca. "I also want to thank our parents and guardians, who are a huge part of our collective success here at RPE. By working with your children at home, by having them present and on-time each day, and by supporting all that we do here at school you have helped us to transform our little school into a California Distinguished School!"

At Ericson Elementary, community involvement is also key to bolstering the work of the school's staff.

"We pride ourselves on our ability to work in symphony with our community and families to ensure that all decisions are student centered, "said Ericson principal Darius Ashton. "Teachers and staff embrace challenges as an opportunities to better serve our children."

Ericson vice principal Barb Waller agrees. "We credit this amazing award to the hard work of all of our staff and students every day, and also our parents who make their child's learning a top priority."

A component of the California School Recognition Program, the Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools based on performance and progress state indicators including test scores, suspension rates, and conditions and climate. Elementary schools and middle and high schools are recognized in alternate years; therefore, this year's awardees will hold their title for two years.

All distinguished school awardees will be honored in February at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, according to Thurmond's office.
